On May 29th, Bullfrog Power hosted the fourth annual Sustainability Snapshot, an event dedicated to celebrating sustainability innovators in our community. Attendees enjoyed drinks and appetizers at the Gladstone Hotel as they listened to three short talks from forward-thinking Bullfrog partners.

Mike Murray, Director of Dresden Vision Canada, taught us that complex problems (a third of the global population needs glasses but can’t get them) can be solved by radical simplification (make glasses cheaper and better). His story inspired us never to settle for “that’s just the way it is.”

Christina Zeidler, President of the Gladstone Hotel, shared her philosophy of how art, sustainability, and business should coexist. We learned how art at the Gladstone is sparking conversations about everything from urban chicken farming to textile recycling.

Daniel Bida, Executive Director of ZooShare, explained how to turn discarded food and poo from the zoo into precious biogas and nutritious fertilizer. His takeaway? One person’s waste is another person’s resource.

Bullfrog now offers power purchase agreement advisory services

We’re excited to offer our customers a new way to meet their renewable energy goals: our advisory services for power purchase agreements (PPAs). Physical and virtual PPAs allow organizations across Canada to contract directly with renewable energy producers in Alberta.

PPAs provide organizations with renewable energy certificates (RECs) and help transition the energy grid to renewable power.

With the right expertise to mitigate risk, PPAs can also provide organizations with energy cost security and potential cost savings. “As a founding member of the Business Renewables Centre Canada, Bullfrog is well positioned to advise our customers on the Canadian energy market,” said Sean Drygas, President of Bullfrog Power.

Bullfrog hosted a workshop in Toronto to introduce our partners and other interested parties to PPAs. Attendees learned about the benefits and risks associated with PPAs, as well as how Bullfrog can facilitate the PPA process and help mitigate the risks involved.

The Bullfrog Power Award goes to Stomata Collective!

As sponsors of the Gladstone Hotel's Grow Op event, we had the opportunity to give an award to a participating artist. We were proud to present Stomata Collective with the Bullfrog Power Award for their art installation, “The Exchange.” This interactive piece includes a wooden bench and a backdrop of luminous strands. These strands represent the symbiotic relationships between fungi and tree root systems, which allow them to share energy and nutrients.

The artwork evokes interdependence and connection. When you sit on the bench, the strands behind your seat light up and reach for another person. The Exchange is also concerned with sustainability; it uses corn-starch-based plastic, sustainably harvested wood, and bullfrogpowered lights.

We sat down with the Collective to learn more about the members’ inspirations and their commitment to the environment. You can read the interview here.

Share what makes you a #ProudCanadian

With Canada Day coming up fast, we’ve been thinking about what makes us proud to live in the Great White North. Unsurprisingly, our country’s awe-inspiring natural beauty came up a lot. Our nation is the “tallest” country in the world, seeing as our southern border is at the same latitude as northern California and our northern territories stretch up to the Arctic Ocean.

Living in such a vast country means having a lot of land to take care of. But it also means having a lot of opportunities to harness our resources responsibly. Every day at Bullfrog, we’re inspired to see what individual citizens and Canadian organizations are doing to protect the environment and support their communities.

There are so many reasons to be a #ProudCanadian, we’re going to need your help to list them all! Follow Bullfrog on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for your chance to share your Canadian pride and be entered to win one of four Parks Canada Discovery Passes.
